SCTAG Monthly Meeting

Where: Aptos Village Park Clubhouse

Speaker: Joan Near

Beyond the Basic Band: Hexagonal Tablet Weaving…and Much More

Joan Near presents a study box and accompanying book on 6 sided tablet weaving, along with her own samples and thoughts about the process. The study box comes from the tablet weaving organization called TWIST.

From there, Joan will take us through the history and spectacular range of lesser-known tablet weaving techniques, as laid out in 4 classic books from German scholar, weaver and graphic artist, Claudia Wollny.

There are true double-sided bands, cable work which twists over and under, beautiful brocades, and textured bands, just to name a few. Some techniques remain in the shadows because they’re a pain in the butt to make!  Others are relatively simple to create, so who knows why they’ve fallen into obscurity. Still others are newly-discovered due to advances in the field of textile anthropology.

This presentation is not overly technical, so if you’re not a tablet weaver, you can still enjoy the patterns and colors of the bands made in unique and unusual ways. Come and enjoy the diversity!
